Background

A scientist who learned to build the company too.

The short version: I've sat at the bench, in the founder's chair, and across the table from investors — mostly in and around therapeutics — and Zephyr Venturecraft is where I bring all three to bear for other ventures.

I started where most scientists do — fascinated by how living systems work and determined to understand them properly. A BSc at Aberystwyth and then research degrees at Warwick took me deep into molecular and synthetic biology, where I learned the discipline that still underpins everything I do: respect for what the data actually says, and suspicion of the story we'd like it to tell.

But the lab was only ever half the story. I became increasingly drawn to the harder question of how frontier science becomes something real — a product, a company, a thing that outlives the grant. That pull led me to co-found and lead NanoSyrinx, a venture built around intracellular protein delivery, where I've had to learn the parts of company-building they don't teach you at the bench: raising money, hiring ahead of certainty, and making decisions with incomplete information and real consequences.

Along the way I've spent meaningful time on the other side of the table — close to how investors evaluate deep tech, what makes them lean in, and what quietly kills a round. That perspective changed how I think about building. It's one thing to know your science is good; it's another to make it legible and fundable to people who decide in twenty minutes what took you twenty months.

Zephyr Venturecraft is how I bring all of that to other founders and teams. My centre of gravity is therapeutics development — it's where my depth runs and where I add the most — but good company-building instincts travel, so I'm always open to the wider deep-tech problems that share the same DNA. I'm not a generalist consultant who happens to like science, and I'm not an academic dispensing theory. I'm someone who has carried the weight of the things I now advise on — and that's the only kind of advice I think is worth paying for.

The path

From bench to boardroom.

2010 — 2013

BSc, Biology — Aberystwyth University

Foundations in molecular biology and a first taste of research that doesn't come with an answer key.

2014 — 2015

MSc by Research — University of Warwick

Moving from coursework into genuine investigation, and the rigour that comes with owning a question end to end.

2015 — 2019

PhD, Synthetic Biology — University of Warwick

Engineering biological systems from the ground up; learning to build, break, and trust the evidence.

2019 — 2020

Postdoctoral research & translation

The pivot point — recognising that the most interesting work lay in turning the science into something that ships.

2020

Co-founded NanoSyrinx

Spinning out intracellular protein-delivery technology into a venture — and stepping into the founder's chair.

2021 — present

Building, raising & leading

Growing NanoSyrinx through funding rounds and the daily reality of building a deep tech company.

2024 — present

Zephyr Venturecraft & venture work

Advising other founders and teams, and spending time on the investor side with Saras Capital.

“The science has to be right. But being right isn't enough — it has to become legible, fundable, and real. That gap is where I do my best work.”
